Teens Matter at Thorold Public Library
Donations received will fund a designated teen space in Thorold Public Library.
Every day, teens from the local high school (within a two block distance), spend time at the library during the day on their breaks and after school. The Library is their safe and inclusive community space.
Due to this increase in teen visitors, the Library has hired a part time Programmer to facilitate teen programs. Since May 2023 to September 2023, 38 teen programs were held with 240 teens and 41 adults in attendance. Programs included: Teen Subscription Boxes, a Teen Advisory Board, Teen Writing Club, Teen After School Movies, Dungeons and Dragons, and Teen Photography Contests. On November 18, 2023, the Library is hosting it’s first Youth Mental Health symposium. Programs planned for 2024 include: Teen Famous Artists Art Classes, Teen Writing Contests, Galetines Sugar Cookie Decorating Party, March Break DIY Teen Week, Teen Social Action Club, Homework Hour Study Space, a Poetry Showcase and a Year End Art Showcase in partnership with Thorold Secondary School.
The biggest request from the Library’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is a “Hub Space” to study, hang out and read in. One that welcomes all. Ideally, the hub space would include: group study space, individual study space, Young People collection showcase such as TAB book displays, Art showcase, a magnetic poetry wall, a lounge area and mental health community offerings.
The Library Board is requesting help from the community to make this happen for our teens! We appreciate your help.
